Frequently Asked Questions

Who can benefit? A wide variety of people come for treatment, ranging from children to the elderly, and many have found it extremely beneficial where other forms of treatment have been unsuccessful. Five Element Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with other care you are receiving.

I specialize in people in pain and people with depression and anxiety. However, I also enjoy working with people who have fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, fatigue, joint problems and many other complaints. Although not limited to, the following are areas in which patients have experienced significant improvements from acupuncture:

Asthma, back pain, chemotherapy side effects, infertility, pain relief, digestive problems, headaches, migraines, high blood pressure, insomnia, menstrual problems, peri/menopause, stress, life's transitions (i.e. divorce, career change, grief, etc.), overall well-being.

Acupuncture can also be used to maintain good health and as a preventative medicine.

Does it hurt? Acupuncture needles are about the size of a human hair and are solid.  They feel NOTHING like a doctor's injection.  You won't feel the needle until it contacts the energy.  This sensation is often described as a dull ache or a buzz.

Are the needles sterile? Yes. The needles are sterile and disposed of after each use.

How many treatments will I need?  I won't know until we begin treatment because each person is different and responds differently to treatment. As a very general rule, I recommend you plan to come in once a week for six weeks.  This usually allows enough time to begin creating a good foundation of energy.  At the end of the six weeks, I can re-evaluate and hopefully begin spreading out treatments to bi-weekly, and eventually seasonal visits.

How does acupunture work?  Acupuncture works by using moxabustion and needles to balance the energy.  Moxabustion is a technique which uses an herb called Artimisia Vulgaris.  The herb (called moxa) is rolled into a small cone and burned on the acupunture point to warm and prepare the energy to be needled.  Then the needle is inserted to directly affect the energy.

What do you mean by "weakest link"? Every one of us has an area that's our weakest. This is what gets affected first by stress. When this piece of us goes out, it affects other areas in us. By treating this weakest area and keeping it balanced, strong and supported, we see symptoms fall away, we feel better in ourselves, and we can live life more fully. If it's not in balance, the symptoms will not truly be resolved. They can be patched or pushed down further into the system. As a result, they may show up somewhere else as a different symptom.
